The role of accentual pattern in early lexical representation

چکیده
The interaction between prosodic and segmental aspects of infant representations for speech was explored using the head-turn paradigm, with untrained everyday familiar words and phrases as stimuli. At 11 months English-learning infants, like French infants (Hall e & Boysson-Bardies, 1994), attended significantly longer to a list of familiar lexical items than to a phonetically comparable rare list, but 9-month-olds did not. Reversing the stress pattern of the familiar items failed to block word-form recognition in 11-month-olds, although a time-course analysis showed that it delayed the infant response. Changing the initial consonant of English words did block word recognition while change to the second consonant did not. Time-course analyses of both the English and the original French data showed that altering the consonant of the unaccented syllable delays word-form recognition in both languages while change to the accented syllable has a stronger effect in English than in French. 2003 Elsevier Inc. Mental Representation of Cognates/Noncognates in Persian-Speaking EFL Learners
The purpose of this study was to investigate the mental representation of cognate and noncognate translation pairs in languages with different scripts to test the prediction of dual lexicon model (Gollan, Forster, & Frost, 1997). Two groups of Persian-speaking English language learners were tested on cognate and noncognate translation pairs in Persian-English and English-Persian directions with...
متن کاملThe role of the acoustic correlates of stress in the perception of Spanish accentual contrasts by French speakers
The aim of this research is to examine the role of the acoustic correlates of lexical stress in the integration of accentual information in French speakers. A shape/pseudoword matching task is used, as it implies not only a low-level acoustic processing, but also a lexical processing. Results show, on the one hand, an influence of the accentual pattern in the perception of stress; on the other,...

Written word recognition by the elementary and advanced level Persian-English bilinguals
According to a basic prediction made by the Revised Hierarchical Model (RHM), at early stages of language acquisition, strong L2-L1 lexical links are formed. RHM predicts that these links weaken with increasing proficiency, although they do not disappear even at higher levels of language development. To test this prediction, two groups of highly proficie...
